چکیده

The BepiColombo Laser Altimeter (BELA) has been selected for flight on board the European Space Agency’s BepiColombo Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO). The experiment is intended to be Europe’s first planetary laser altimeter system. Although the proposed system has similarities to the Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA) currently flying on board NASA’s MESSENGER mission to Mercury, the specific orbit and construction of the MPO force the use of novel concepts for BELA. Furthermore, the base-lined range-finding approach is novel. In this paper, we describe the BELA system and show preliminary results from some prototype testing. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Technical Concept of a European Laser Altimeter for Plane- Tary Exploration

In the past year, our team has developed an alternative concept for a high-performance Laser Altimeter for Planetary Exploration (LAPE) for a Mercury mission with parameters similar to the BepiColombo Mercury Planetary Orbiter mission. The instrument must be capable to operate in a harsh thermal environment. Its mass is required to be less than 10kg and the power consumption less than 20W. In o...

High accuracy alignment facility for the receiver and transmitter of the BepiColombo Laser Altimeter.

The accurate co-alignment of the transmitter to the receiver of the BepiColombo Laser Altimeter is a challenging task for which an original alignment concept had to be developed. We present here the design, construction and testing of a large collimator facility built to fulfill the tight alignment requirements. We describe in detail the solution found to attenuate the high energy of the instru...

Approximate Symmetries of Interplanetary Orbit Determination. the Bepicolombo Case

The Radio science experiment of the BepiColombo mission to the planet Mercury shall allow to solve for the gravity field of the planet up to degree and order 25, for an improved orbit of Mercury and a very accurate verification of Einstein’s theory of gravitation, for measuring the rotation state of the planet, for mapping the topography (in combination with a laser altimeter). To actually obta...

Mars orbiter laser altimeter: receiver model and performance analysis.

The design, calibration, and performance of the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) receiver are described. The MOLA measurements include the range to the surface, which is determined by the laser-pulse time of flight; the height variability within the footprint determined by the laser echo pulse width; and the apparent surface reflectivity determined by the ratio of the echo to transmitted pul...

A Fiber-Optic-Based 1550-nm Laser Radar Altimeter with RF Pulse Compression

-We are developing a laser radar (lidar) altimeter that uses commercial off-the-shelf fiber-optic components and traditional RF and digital signal processing techniques to achieve fine-range accuracy despite a low transmit peak power. A 1550-nm operating wavelength was selected so that available erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) could be used to provide optical gain. The transmitted signal,...
